THE PERILS OF PASSIVITY How do demons gain entrance into one's life? If demons could enter at will then each of us would be completely demonized. Demons cannot enter unless a way is provided from them. Gates through which demons enter can be identified. In fact, it is important that these gates be recognized as the prelude to deliverance and also that the gates can be successfully closed to prevent re-entrance of demons that have been expelled. First, let's consider several of the most common gates through which demons enter a person, then we will focus our attention on the most common of all gates afforded our enemy, the devil. Common gates through which demons enter are: (1) The family gate. This gate provides entrance of family inherited curses. Many demons find access when family life does not provide God's truth in word and deed. (2) The sin gate. Demons enter when God's commandments are not kept, for "Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin" John. 8:34. (3) The Trauma gate. Satan takes advantage of sickness, accidents, divorce, abuse and many other traumatic situations. (4) The undisciplined-life gate. The mind, emotions, will, body. tongue and spirit-man must be disciplined in keeping with God's Word, otherwise demons will seize the opportunity. (5) The religious gate. The Pharisees were as religious as one can get, yet Jesus said to them, "You are your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do" John 8:44. (6) The relationships gate. Demonic soul ties are formed through perverse relationships. "Evil companionships, (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character" I Cor. 15:33.. 7) The Occult Gate. No more than a casual involvement with anything occult is as though a red carpet were rolled out to welcome demon spirits. (8) The Passivity Gate. After more than thirty years intense involvement in deliverance, I am persuaded that the most common gate through which demons gain entrance is "passivity". This gate is opened when one is not active in his Christian faith and is complacent, indifferent and lazy; when one's will is neither activated to follow Christ, to crucify the flesh or to resist the devil. The antidote for passivity is aggression. Every command and commission from God requires a personal "will" response. We are expected to actively love, worship and serve God. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your might" Deut. 6:.5. One of the biggest challenges confronting a deliverance minister is passivity in the person to whom he is ministering. Unless the will is activated, failure is certain. Active faith is essential in receiving anything from God, and this includes deliverance. "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save [Greek sozo, deliver] him?...faith by itself, if it does not have works is dead" Jas. 2:14, 17.
